Math Fellows Tutoring Program
McGlone Elementary is proud to continue our participation in an ambitious network of 53 Denver schools implementing a progressive Math Tutoring program. This high-dosage, data-driven approach leverages effective leadership, increased instructional time and high expectations to achieve results for the entire 4th grade. Everyday, each student will be attending 50-minute, 4:1 tutoring sessions with a trained Math Fellow, both to reinforce grade-level content and to develop foundational math skills. Fellows are responsible for planning and implementing customized lessons and assessments, as well as monitoring progress, analyzing results and delivering targeted assistance for every child.
The Denver Summit Schools Network (DSSN) was created to be the most comprehensive reform initiative of any school district in Colorado. For three years, member schools have been working to plan, implement and monitor a turnaround plan integrating this high-dosage framework for academic improvement, and the results have been promising. McGlone Elementary was one of the first schools to implement this plan, and in its first year, the Tutoring program helped to double our number of math-proficient 4th grade students. DSSN has since consistently outpaced the district overall in proficiency – and in 2012, McGlone ranked #18 in the state for student growth rates in mathematics. This Tutoring initiative helps us work toward the goal of dramatically improving educational and life opportunities for all students.
